It also reduces the chances of you being left red-faced because you've tried to refute something that wasn't ever the claim/position in the first place.

I've been there before. Trying to counter an argument or claim based on what I'd heard about that claim, which turned out to be a gross misinterpretation of it. Not a good feeling!
